What makes Aries the first sign of the zodiac?

The zodiac is like a cycle, a wheel. Why is it that one is the first one and one is the last one? I don't get it.

Where did this idea of Aries being first come from?|||the same thing that makes january the first month of a year.

Aries is first because it just fits with all of the other astrological patterns. its cardinal and its fire.

all these things are firsts in astrological patterns. its always fire, earth, air, water... and its always cardinal, fixed, and then mutable.

so there u go..

of course.. the real reason is because aries are just awesome and special.|||Aries (March 21-April 20). It is considered the first sign of the zodiac as this is when spring starts, ergo the symbolism of birth and beginnings. Also, in ancient Roman times, March was the first month of the year. It was changed to January by Julius Caesar in 46BC. Coincidentally, Aries is ruled by the planet Mars in astrology. Mars was the Roman god of war, and where the month of March got its name. The Greeks' god of war was Ares.|||I had to look it up also, I knew it was 0d or something..

Here is a Wikipedia quote;

What follows is a list of the twelve signs of the modern zodiac (with the ecliptic longitudes of their first points), where 0掳 Aries is understood as the vernal equinox, with their Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, and Babylonian names (but note that the Sanskrit and the Babylonian name equivalents denote the constellations only, not the tropical zodiac signs). Also, the "English translation" is not usually used by English speakers. The Latin names are standard English usage.

And then there is the Age of Aries,,,|||Those people who answered that it was to do with Spring are correct.

The Spring Equinox, also called the Vernal Equinox, is 0 degree Aries when the Sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north. Now day and night are equal length all over the Earth.

This is in contrast to the Winter Equinox in December when we have the longest night of the year and the shortest day.|||Is It Becuz Of The Number One ?|||Maybe because that was the one they came up with first?
